Problem: sound has disappeared after WinXP was re-installed. Everest informed me the only Audio Device was an SiS 7012. I attempted to install a driver using the link given on the Everest information page, but after downloading when i tried to install it it stopped midway with the following error message .536870397 and a further msg ‘Failed to install’.
Solution: If it’s an SIS chipset motherboard – which in 99% of the cases it is if you have that sound codec on your mainboard – what you want is to use the Realtek AC97 driver directly from the realtek site it’ll work great.
If Windows crashes during the installation, you have to clean all the previous AC`97 items in the registry by regedit.
